Serie B is the second tier of Italian football after Serie A. The league was established in the 1929/30 season and called Liga Calcio until 2010. Since 2010, the name of the division has been Serie B.
The championship consists of 20 teams that play each other twice in 38 rounds. Three clubs get promotion to Serie A. The top two teams in the final standings get directly promoted, while the teams from 3rd to 10th place determine the last participant in Serie A via playoff games. Four clubs are relegated to Serie C. The bottom three teams in the final standings are directly sent to the lower division for the next campaign, while the teams finishing 16th and 17th play a playoff match. However, if the 16th has 5+ points more than the 17th, the second is directly relegated, too.
Genoa have won Serie B 6 times, followed by Atalanta and Palermo with 5, Bari and Brescia with 4. The team with the most seasons in Serie B is Brescia, who have spent 64 campaigns in the Italian's second tier. They are followed by Verona with 53 seasons and Modena with 52 each as of the 2022-2023 season.
